About Me: I am currently a high school senior at The Athenian School. In addition to my love of photography and science, most of my time is spent competing and training as an equestrian athlete. The framework for this project began during my photography classes both freshman and sophomore year, and has continued through my Advanced Photography class I am currently taking as a senior. Throughout the course of my high school photography classes I have been working toward one goal: to find my worldview. Fueled by my passion for science, I am currently working on shooting a project that conveys how I see the world and what makes me tick.
Artist Statement:
My choice of subject comes from a place of curiosity and wonder in approaching the world around me. My worldview is centered around process and experimentation. I have chosen to look into the illusion and magic behind the laws of nature in the world. Recognizing what science has made possible for humans as beautiful I want to capture the beauty in the fundamental laws of science that made each discovery possible. I chose to delve into the crossroads between understanding and uncertainty with the hope of framing laws of nature as “otherworldly.” Throughout the process I have also found that photography has helped me to see the beauty in mistakes. Some of the most powerful photographs in the project have come from unexpected results captured in an image. While beauty can sometimes seem incongruous when used to describe science, my goal is to reassess this mentality. I respect the power of interdisciplinarity as a way create and discover by thinking across boundaries. For me, looking at the world through both scientific and artistic lenses has stimulated new ways of thinking. Furthermore, I have found that gaining knowledge about the mechanisms behind each photograph adds beauty and wonder to the images. My goal in creating this project is to convey that even heavily tested laws of science still have room for discovery and exploration. Staying true to the project’s title, “No Strings Attached,” no content in the photographs is created or modified digitally. Rather, strictly focused on what is possible with the natural laws of science.
